Article Abstract:
A successful appearance on the television programme 'University Challenge' does not seem to result in more students applying to attend the university. Although the authorities at Bangor university suggest good publicity may have partly been responsible for the 3%-4% increase in applicants for 1999. Some 110 universities applied to be on the programme, of which only 28 were chosen. Sussex university students are very critical of the program. 'University Challenge' is watched by an average of 2.5 million people each week. The Open University won the competition for the 1998-1999 season.

Risk in the rules
Article Abstract:
The Challenger disaster, which resulted in seven deaths in 1986, has been studied by Diana Vaughan. She had previously analysed corporate culture, and had to learn some engineering to understand the Challenger disaster. She examined the culture of decision making at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). She argues that deviance became normal within NASA culture, and risks became accepted. The problem was in NASA's culture, rather than a problem of breaking rules.
