'Big idea' plucked from a bad old Tory ideology
Article Abstract:
The UK's minister for lifelong learning and higher education examines the education policy of the Conservative Party, arguing that it serves neither society nor higher education. It is argued that economic aspects of the Conservatives' plans do not add up and that they are a populist alternative that rewards those who are better off, caps opportunities for new students and will inevitably result in academics leaving and universities closing.

Will you stand for Blair's bloody-mindedness
Article Abstract:
The shadow education secretary for the Conservative Party in the UK examines his party's education policy, arguing that the Conservatives will ditch the Labour Party's dogma and deliver a fair deal for universities and students. Under the Conservatives, the Labour Party's tuition fees would be scrapped, as would the target of 50% participation in higher education.
