Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the argument that there should be no area that is out of bounds for a researcher to investigate are examined in the light of the current level of media hysteria over paedophiles and child pornography. It is argued that there must be no curbs on the freedom to undertake intellectual exploration, no matter what the field, that the idea of getting special dispensation form either academic or non-academic authorities before conducting research is a repellant one, and that in the past, a variety of institutions - ranging from the Stalinist bureaucracy to the Catholic Church - have supplanted their censorship regimes with a dispensation system for the privileged elite.

Article Abstract:
Integrity is an essential element in good science and is probably the most essential element in maintaining a scientist's credibility, but it can be easily lost in the pursuit of a successful career. It is argued that the pressure is always on young scientists to get work published, and this pressure may lead them down paths where the integrity of their work subsequently gets called into question. Therefore, scientists need to develop the personal strength to be honest with themselves about the work they are doing and recognise when work they have invested considerable time in is in fact useless and admit to a waste of time.

Integrity matters
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to standards of excellence in research are examined from the point of view that this excellence also needs to apply to standards of conduct. It is argued that despite the general expectation that researchers should possess a high level of integrity in relation to the work they do, the level of training that researchers receive in how to demonstrate and maintain their integrity is not very high and that a discussion needs to be started into how standards can be monitored and improved.
