...think the new visa extension charges should be scrapped
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the recently enacted moves by the Home Office in the United Kingdom to implement high charges of between UKPd155 and UKPd250 for international students seeking "leave to remain" within the UK in order to continue or complete their studies are examined. It is argued that these new fees are exploitative and are counter to an earlier declaration by the prime minister that he would alleviate visa formalities for international students in order to bolster the global appeal of the UK's higher education system.

Rammell looks beyond visa hike
Article Abstract:
Higher Education Minister Bill Rammell has announced his determination to ensure that there is a "phase two" to Labour Party plans that have seen the number of overseas students at universities in the UK rise by 100,000. Despite these aims, Rammell has stated that the government will not rethink its plans to increase visa charges and restrict the right of appeal for those whose visa applications are unsuccessful.

Fears for enrolments if visa charges rise again
Article Abstract:
Universities in the United Kingdom are concerned that a Government consultation on immigration charges could lead to a substantial increase in visa fees. They are worried that it might result in a decline in enrolment of overseas students in U.K. universities and adversely affect the benefits international students and academics bring to the U.K.
