...urge India's politicians to denounce cultural vandalism
Article Abstract:
India's politicians are urged to denounce cultural vandalism following the ransacking of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (Bori) in Pune, India, by a group of nationalist Hindus upset that Bori was mentioned in the credits of James Laine's book "Shivaji: Hindu King in Islamic India", a book with which they have taken exception. While some politicians, including Indian prime minister Atol Behari Vajpayee, have condemned that act of cultural vandalism, others who have not yet done so are urged to make their condemnation known lest violence be taken as an acceptable form of political protest.
