AST changes name, finds extra owners
Article Abstract:
Samsung Electronics, which has a 100% interest in AST Research since 1995, has sold a 65% stake in AST Research to an investment group led by Beny Alagem, the co-founder of Packard Bell Electronics. The investment consortium is paying Samsung $12.5 million but would get full control of AST Research. On the other hand, Samsung would retain control of AST's assembly plants in Texas and Ireland but would have a non-voting share in AST. The investment group is also changing the company's name to AST Computer.

Hybrid ICs contend with flat demand forecasts
Article Abstract:
Hybrid ICs face weak market prospects in 1999 despite strong demand for such products in communications and networks. Manufacturers are hoping that they can approximate 1998's production value of 284 billion yen. They are concentrating on materials technologies for printed circuit boards; circuit design technologies; dense mounting methods including bare-chip systems; micro-connection technologies; and package technologies to foster growth.

Hybrid ICs prove purebred market performers
Article Abstract:
The market for hybrid integrated circuits (ICs) projected to reach Y288 billion in FY 1999. The forecast is based on increasing demand for the product, which will grow 4.5% from FY 1998. Hrybrid ICs are more cost- effective, allow enhanced lead times and offer superior performance compared to their monolithic counterparts. Hybrid ICs encompass multiple chip ICs and multiple chip modules.
