Adding value without adding cost
Article Abstract:
Solectron has found its niche as a contract manufacturer, delivering first-rate quality and growing from $407 million in 1992 sales to over $2.8 billion in 1996. The company made three major acquisitions in 1996: Fine Pitch Technologies, Texas Instruments' Custom Manufacturing Services unit, for $115 million, and Force Computers for $205 million. Solectron must now integrate these new units into its current operations while maintaining its level of service and quality. Information systems, business philosophies and practices and well as personnel issues must all be addressed by the company in order to boost profit margins. Solectron is focusing on providing OEMs with a comprehensive selection of services. Some of Solectron's high-profile customers include Apple Computer, Applied Materials, HP, Honeywell, IBM, Silicon Graphics and Sun Microsystems. The company focuses on maintaining an efficient manufacturing infrastructure, deemphasizing unproven technologies.
