Alterable-memory innovations enhance new-product designs
Article Abstract:
Although semiconductor new-product announcements were down in 1981, a variety of new memory products were developed. The largest number of new memories were ultraviolet-erasable programmable devices, followed by electrically erasable and electrically alterable memories. The largest percentage increase in new-product announcements was claimed by nonvolatile RAM devices.

Intelligent instruments
Article Abstract:
Microprocessors are being used in almost all electronic instruments, including the simplest of digital multimeters. However, manufacturers are beginning to face the issue that high-end multimeters are becoming too complex and sophisticated to be useful. Microprocessors have become so inexpensive that complicated features can be added at very little cost.

Gate-array logic
Article Abstract:
As the technology of logic designs allows reduced size and cost, gate-array logic has emerged as the dominant design technique. Topologies available include basic-gate-only, semicustom, and custom arrays. Gate-arrays may be realized in a variety of configurations including NMOS, CMOS, TTL, and ECL.
