CD formats wrestle with DVD drives for turf in computer field
Article Abstract:
The global demand for CD-ROM drives is expected to increase in 2000, but will decrease 10% by 2001. When desktop computers adopt space-saving designs, the trend will spell diminishing demand for half-height drives and steady orders for thin drives, However, rising shipments for DVD-ROM drives are likely to lower the share of thin CD-ROM drives in the entire ROM drive market. The pattern in the volume shipments will not reverse itself before the second half of 2001 and will continue through 2002.

Recordable CDs exhibit sudden upsurge in popularity
Article Abstract:
The global market for recordable CDs (CD-Rs) is growing fast. It is expected to exceed 1 million units in 2000, in comparison to 500,000 in 1999. Of the global total, the Japanese market may probably account for around 20%. One factor contributing to the market growth is the entry of new manufacturers which should result in the decline in prices and an increase in production to as high as 250,000 units in 2000.

Demand soars for removable discs, plus drives with extra capacity
Article Abstract:
The global demand for removable discs and drives with large capacity is steadily growing, resulting in brisk sales for both consumer and business markets. In Japan, the domestic demand for recordable CDs (CD-Rs) is expected to reach 210 million units, showing a twofold increase from 1999 figures. Thus, the CD-R market is rapidly expanding which arises from its compatibility with CDs and CD-ROMs.
