Demand for MD systems tugs Matsushita into European markets

Matsushita Electric Industrial Company Ltd of Japan plans to capitalize on the growing interest in MiniDisc (MD) audio equipment in Europe by introducing new products in the fall of 1999. The company's planned entry into the European market marks the its first foray into MD markets outside Japan. MD products that the company plans to launch in Europe include minicomponent systems with an MD player, combination MD players and recorders and portable MD players.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Company Ltd's Director of the Television & Network Systems Division, AVC Co, Chosaku Toda, stressed the company is poised to assess TVs toward the future as the demand for large-screen plasma TVs and combination TVs and VCR has been rising in the US. In the US, the company initially get orders for the TU-DST50 model, a full-specification set-top box compatible with digital broadcasts.

Digital TV broadcasts in U.S. usher in larger screens, other set trends
Article Abstract:
The debut of terrestrial digital broadcasting in the US in 1998 has prompted digital TV manufacturers to launch new models. This was evident at the 1999 Winter Consumer Electronics Show, which was participated mainly by Japanese and US companies. The show indicated trends toward sets with larger screens, such as high-definition TVs with 65-in screens. Another trend is the move to HDTVs using plasma display panels.
