Demand for PDPs on target for 200,000 units in 2000
Article Abstract:
Demand for large color plasma display panels (PDPs) in Japan is expected to reach 200,000 units for 2000. The market for PDPs is expanding including airports and rail stations. The Sydney Olympics and DVD players have also spurred the use of PDPs for household use. Large color PDPs are less than 10 cm thick with a screen 40 inches or wider. There are already 42-in models being sold under one million yen but manufacturers strive to bring down prices to less than 10,000 yen or less per inch.

Large color PDPs experience first rush of demand
Article Abstract:
The demand for large color plasma display panels (PDPs) is projected to double to 200,000 units in 2000 and redouble to 400,000 units in 2001. The stronger demand may be attributed to the number of advantages that PDPs offer. They are easier than CRTs to form into direct-view displays measuring 40 in or more. PDPs have also remained thin in comparison to CRTs. Manufacturers are planning to mass-produce PDPs for use in TVs.
