Intel outside looking in Windows CE
Article Abstract:
The market for microprocessors to run Microsoft Windows CE software for hand-held data devices has been left wide open. Although Microsoft ported the CE software to its hardware partner Intel's X86 architecture, the software maker also ported Windows CE to several rival microprocessors. Some of these vendors have released chips recently, beating Intel to the market. In particular, Hitachi's SH-3 chip for handheld PCs has been ordered for installation in products by Casio, Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, and LG Electronics. AMD has developed a CE-compatible chip based on the 486. Called the Elan SC410 chip, the microprocessor offers familiarity and simple design, as well as code density. DEC is entering the CE market with an Advanced-RISC-Machine-based chip called StrongARM, running on 100MHz to 270MHz. Motorola is focused on the CE market with a version of its PowerPC chip, anticipating the microprocessor to end up in some systems by the end of 1997. Intel appears to be waiting to see if the CE market will be lucrative before joining the fray.

Halla shakes up tradition-bound National
Article Abstract:
National Semiconductor Corp's Pres Brian Halla has decided that his company will not be a fast follower in the industry when it comes to improvements in processing technology. The new leader of the semiconductor company believes it is important to have leading-edge manufacturing technology because otherwise the company faces the risk of being left behind in a fast-paced market. Halla has moved fast to shake out the management at National and sell off assets that were not producing. He succeeds Gilbert Amelio who was much slower and cautious in his management approach. Halla caused the departure of 15 vice presidents after his arrival and immediately got rid of the Office of the President. Other moves include modernizing the company's processing technology and speeding design cycles.
