Disc or Tape? Digital Autosound Heading for Fork in the Road
Article Abstract:
Although digital discs will be first in the autosound market, industry executives say that digital tape is definitely coming. Mitsubishi introduced a digital disk player for automobiles at the June CES. By the time digital tape makes it to the market, digital disc will already have considerable market penetration. There is expected to be room for both on the market for some time. Digital disc players for automobiles have the disadvantage of not fitting in the dash board. Digital discs are also very delicate.

Many customers are surprised when they hear a demonstration of high end autosound equipment. The sale of expensive equipment involves ego and prestige. The difference between high end and ultra high end equipment is not that great.

Many telephone manufacturers are turning to a growing OEM business with Bell operating companies. Department stores and catalog chains will probably start introducing private label phones by early 1985. Manufacturers are concerned that private labeling will hurt their own distribution.
