Color TV: Is It Poised for the Worst Shakeout in Boom-and- Bust History?
Article Abstract:
The United States market absorbed fourteen million color TV sets in 1983 and is expected to buy at least fifteen million sets in 1984. Despite this great demand there is excessive competition and only marginal profitability. GE lost money on its color TVs in 1983. Zenith and RCA complained about the price competition. There are seventeen manufacturers of TVs in the United States and there are twenty eight major brands on the market. Major competition comes from Taiwan and Korea. They have been dumping TV sets in the United States at less than fair value. Nine United States TV manufacturers are owned by the Japanese or make sets exclusively for them. Supply will eventually overcome demand and there will be a shakeout.

Videocassette Dilemma: Who Will Be Left When the Smoke Clears?
Article Abstract:
Surging demand for videocassettes has resulted in good sales and excessive competition. To meet demand, videocassette shipments had to be three times more than anticipated. The four elements in the videocassette market are domestic industry, import group, VCR hardware manufacturers and photo manufacturers. One problem of the industry is that manufacturers of videotapes are making industrial sales to the hardware, photo and off brand companies. When sales stabilize this should end.
