Tax law uncertainty
Article Abstract:
Uncertainty over future tax laws and the prospect of tax reforms having an effective date retroactive to the beginning of 1986 have complicated companies' equipment acquisition decisions. Many companies are making contingency plans for various tax reform outcomes. Leasing companies are reluctant to write long-term equipment leases without indemnification for tax losses, but have begun to share such risks equally with their customers. The alternative minimum tax is the biggest problem for equipment lessors, since this tax reform would effectively eliminate accelerated depreciation as an incentive to lease equipment. The leasing industry is trying to develop new financing strategies to offset lost tax benefits, especially for large equipment items, such as airplanes and industrial machinery.
