Hawaii receives first HPFF underground cable

Hawaiian Electric Co. began constructing Hawaii's first high-pressure, fluid-filled underground cables in 1987. The difficult and innovative project is described, including types of equipment used, consideration of traffic density and record-saving procedures.

Urban construction proves challenging

United Illuminating Co. solved some of its growth problems by using distribution substations with underground transmission lines. The project provided aesthetic as well as environmentally-correct solutions.
