How contamination causes transformer failures
Article Abstract:
Transformer failure can be caused by contaminants, such as metal filings or cellulosic insulating material, in the cooling oil. These contaminants act as a conductor between the lead exit and tank wall. Proper insulation and clean cooling oil can prevent transformer failures.

Article Abstract:
Iowa Power Inc reduced the expense of updating an aging transformer by replacing its transformer fluid with a less-flammable liquid. Using a less-flammable PCB transformer fluid eliminated the need for constructing fire barriers, which would have been costly.

System monitors transformer condition

American Electric Power Service Corp helped develop a transformer performance analysis system that monitors electric transformers. The computer program is designed to diagnose transformer problems remotely and eliminate preventive maintenance.
