In developing digital still cameras, Sanyo looks beyond pixels

Japan-based Sanyo Electric Co Ltd's Super One chip LSI has made its possible for the electronics manufacturer to develop innovative digital cameras by integrating functions for the CCD system, JPEG compression and decompression and the electronic zoom on a 32-bit RISC CPU. The technology has also faciliated swift recording and reproduction functions. Sanyo's latest digital camera model, the SX500, features a more advanced LSI that incorporates three kinds of buses. The SX500 offers both rapid camera speed and fine picture quality.

DSC-F505V, DSC-F55V digital cameras

Sony Corp has developed two digital cameras, namely, CyberShot DSC-F505 and DSC-F55V. The products use CCDs with 3.34 million pixels and feature Carl Zeiss lenses for excellent performance. They perform 4x analog- digital conversion to expand the dynamic range and broaden the color gradations. They produce excellent image quality when changing among different image sizes due to the Super Resolution Converter technology. The DSC-F505 is priced at 125,000 yen while the DSC-F505V is priced at 88,000 yen.

Hitachi Ltd's MPEG camera, developed by the company's Consumer Products and Information Media Systems Group, has evolved into one of the best presentation tools for businesses. The camera, which debuted at Vision 95 in Sep 1994, was released in Japan in Feb 1997 and in the US in Mar 1997. Hitachi's MPEG camera, an awardee of prestigious awards at various trade shows and exhibitions, is backed by the MPEG-1 process semiconductor and by the firm's own SH3 microprocessor.
