Article Abstract:
In 1997, the French production of printed circuits (exports included) in France reached FFr 2.88bn in 1997, up 4% over 1996. Only three segments posted a positive evolution in 1997, especially the printed circuits for the general public, up 19% to FFr 195mn in 1997 and the applications in non-mobile telecoms, up 18% to FFr 576mn in 1997. Industrial applications, the largest segment (29% of the total market) went up 5% to FFr 825mn. On the other hand, applications for mobile telecoms collapsed 15% to FFr 292mn in 1997. The global market of printed circuits in France went up 6% to FFr 4.32bn in 1997. Exports went down 7% to FFr 645mn.

The sales of passive components in France should reach FFr 17.1bn in 1998, up 3.3% over the year before. In 1997, the market went up 5% to FFr 16.55bn with the two largest segments reporting increases among the highest. The sales of connectors went up 7.5% to FFr 5bn while printed circuits rose 5.8% to FFr 4.32bn. The strongest increase was for ferrites with FFr 220mn (up 12.2%) while only two segments reported a negative progression. Relays fell 1.7% to FFr 295mn and multi-chip modules and hybrid circuits were down 2.4% to FFr 1.03bn in 97.

In 1998, the French government will provide a subsidy of FFr 40mn to help develop a number of projects in securitized payment systems for the electronic trade. In the telecoms field, 29 r&d projects will be offered a subsidy of FFr 260mn that year. The FFr 260mn represent the first budget received by RNRT, the state entity in charge of the r&d in telecoms. RNRT was set up in the beginning of 1998.
