Malaysian base outputs most Sharp VCRs, hastens progress

Sharp Electronics Malaysia (SEM) produces about 90% of the VCR units sold the under Sharp brand. It started manufacturing VCRs in 1992, reaching the 1 million mark by yearend, which had gone beyond the 15th millionth mark by Dec 1996. For 1998, it expects to produce 2.7 million units, 8% higher than in 1997. SEM ships 50% of its products to North America, 20% to the Middle East and 30% to Asia. In the future, SEM plans to produce more parts in-house and cut lead times between order receipt and product shipment.

Sharp Corp offers fresh images of digital entertainment through its proprietary liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. The firm's concept revolves around the use of a color LCD television. Sharp boasts a full line of LCD televisions in a variety of sizes that range from 10-28 in. Other characteristics of the firm's LCD products are 1280 x RGB x vertical 768 lines. The high-definition LCDs offer high-definition digital broadcasting.
