MiniDisc shipments roll along, mainly in Japan, Europe

The world market for MiniDisc equipment, discs that are smaller than CDs but are offering the same digital-quality sound, reached 11 to 12 million units in 1999. The devices, which first appeared in Japan in 1992, already boasts of a growing acceptance in Europe and other Asian countries. In Japan, where the demand for the format reached 8 million units in 1999 alone, MiniDiscs are expected to continue their dominance because of their affordability and ease of use.

MiniDisc players spur Japan's audio sales, expand user base

The market for digital audio disc or minidisc players and related products in Japan faces growing demand. Industry analysts project shipments to reach five million units worth Y200 billion for FY 1998, increasing 50% and 25% in volume and value, respectively. International markets are also expected to have higher demand than the local Japanese market. The growing minidisc market is also expected to increase customers of portable and audio components.

MDW-1 minidisc editing, playback systems
Article Abstract:
Bose Corp of Farmingham, MA, has introduced the MDW-1 minidisc console player in 1999. The player is easy to operate and can handle two sources of optical digital input. Aside from playback functions, the MDW-1 features editing, title input and sampling rate conversion capabilities. The player is also fully compatible with the company's WBS-1EX, -3EX, -5EX and PLS-1310 audio systems and sells for $645.
