Coming soon: DSP everywhere
Article Abstract:
Digital signal processing (DSP) is spreading to a huge array of high-volume consumer and commercial systems, and it is emerging as a small but critical part of integrated circuits called DSP chips. Embedded DSP is a building block that functions inside multimedia engines, video processors and disk drive controllers. At times DSP cannot be viewed because it is software executed on a general purpose microprocessor. Industry experts reveal that DSP is no longer a niche technology and is now in the mainstream impacting nearly every market. Digital electronics have helped the DSP market grow. Cellular phones and wireless networks are the latest growth areas for ICs with DSP features. The multimedia craze in home-based PCs is pushing the demand for chips with DSP, as well. A third emerging application for DSP is motor control, which may put DSP in home appliances and on every disk drive.

More doldrums for DRAMs?
Article Abstract:
DRAM prices dropped below the $7 level on the spot market during summer 1997, a price point at which vendors cannot make a profit. The prices of 16Mb DRAMs had recovered in 1st qtr 1997 to over $9, a point at which the vendors could make a good profit. Contract prices are much higher, ranging from $8.25 to $8.50 for 16Mb DRAM parts, although they are down from $9 to $10.50 in the 1st qtr. Prices are declining during a period of increasing demand. Demand has grown between 70 percent and 100 percent in 1997, but production is still exceeding the demand. The spot market is currently less important to the industry than it was in 1996, when it was driven by demand from VARs who were adding memory to their PC products.
