Finding the right fit
Article Abstract:
Several multimedia video connector interface standards are vying for industry acceptance, but few OEMs have made a commitment so far. The two current leaders in the race for acceptance are the IEEE 1394 standard and the Video Electronics Standards Association's enhanced video connector (EVC) standard. With the monitor emerging as an I/O hub, the decision of OEMs takes on greater importance in the PC industry. The 400-Mbps 1394 standard only carries digital video and is being used by consumer electronics digital peripheral manufacturers to connect their products to the PC. EVC uses Molex's pseudo-coax video connector technology to support analog video signal bandwidths over 2 GHz. It supports Universal Serial Bus and audio. However, although it is also supports 1394, its based on analog video, which is a limiting factor.

The big squeeze; demand for even smaller resistors and capacitors is accelerating, but technical hurdles loom
Article Abstract:
Vendors in the $15-billion resistor and capacitor market face a faster-than-expected demand for smaller computers, telephones, toys and other systems. The manufacturers have responded to the shift through the integration of capacitors, resistors, inductors, logic circuitry and active components into network, chip and array products. Another development entails the increase of thin-film-on-silicon devices in the overall passives market, especially in active/passive component and integrated passive component (IPC) devices. The two trends may outperform the developing field of multi-device resistors and capacitor chip arrays in thick-film technology. There is rising OEM interest in integrated devices and chip arrays and passives manufacturers may begin adopting switching to thin-film-on-silicon process technology.
