A number of telephone retailers see franchising as the only way to survive and grow in today's market. Some of the companies engaging in franchising are Public Phone Stores, American Phone Stores, Speakeasy and The Phone Company. The main problems of franchising are the large capital requirements and the regulations and paperwork.

Telephone sales in 1984 should reach thirty million units. Unit sales of corded phones should increase fifteen percent, cordless phones twenty-five percent and answers, thirty-eight percent. Basic phones should continue to account for forty to forty-five per cent of the market. Total phone sales are expected to reach $1.6 billion.
