Pioneer plasma and THX for '98
Article Abstract:
Pioneer exhibited in its 1998 Road Show the PDP-501HD, its first bid for HDTV market. The three-inch deep plasma display measures 50 inches and is capable of supporting a maximum resolution of 1280 x 768. It comes with a built-in line doubler that will change standard NTSC signals to a DTV 768p signal. The PDP-501HD, which can also serve as a computer monitor, will be launched in September 1998 at an estimated retail price of $25,000. Pioneer also introduced other products in the show including a THX-certified DVD player that comes with independent circuitry for analog audio, digital audio and power supply systems. Called the Elite DV-09, it is set to be shipped in May 1998 for $2,000 SRP.

The student population represents a substantial demand as students frequently take to music to escape the pressures of home and school life.
