Sanyo foresees rising need for small batteries, readies for next challenge

Sanyo Electric Company Ltd is engaged in the mass-production of compact rechargeable batteries such as nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride and lithium ion. Its monthly production capacity is 60 million cells for nickel-cadmium batteries, 30 million cells for nickel-metal hydride and 10 million cells for lithium ion. However, the shortage of most battery parts, with the exception of portable phone-use batteries, is expected to impede production.

Nippon Columbia steps up DVD software production
Article Abstract:
Nippon Columbia Company Ltd is planning to expand its production of DVD software and its music distribution business. The company will be offering 600 DVD titles, mainly related to music, art and science, by the end of FY2000. The company's DVD osftware is produced at its Kawasaki plant in Japan. Additional produdction will begin in Atlanta, GA, in the US in Apr 2001. Combined, the Japanese and US plants will produce 1 million units per month.

Toshiba targets large market with lithium ion batteries
Article Abstract:
Toshiba Battery Company Ltd of Japan is focusing its small rechargeable battery operation on nickel methal hydride (Ni-MH) and lithium ion batteries. As of 1999, the company has a monthly production capacity of 19.5 million Ni-MH batteries and 7 million lithium ion batteries. The company exports 95% of its Ni-MH batteries and 70% of its lithium ion batteries. In autumn of 1999, Toshiba will introduce new prismatic lithium ion batteries.
