Somerset goes to Motorola
Article Abstract:
Motorola and IBM have reported that the Somerset PowerPC microprocessor design center in Austin, TX, will be converted from being jointly owned to becoming the sole ownership of Motorola. The two companies, however, will proceed with their cooperation o the PowerPC architecture while enlarging their own design capabilities. The companies also want to utilize their individual design activities to become key players in desktop microprocessor competition at Apple Computer. Motorola wants to enlarge the market for its PowerPC offerings to cover networking, switching, consumer, transmission infrastructure, imaging and transportation.

Motorola develops 0.10 m Cu process
Article Abstract:
Motorola will report on a high-performance 0.10 micrometer CMOS process with six levels of scaled copper interconnects, at the International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) to be held in San Francisco, CA, from DEcember 6 to 9, 1998. On the front end, the company furnished good electrical isolation down to active spacings of 0.175 micrometer, by utilizing CMP planarized shallow trenches with optimized high-energy retrograde well profiles. On the back end, scaled interconnects with a low-k dielectric material were integrated into the process, with a linear shrink of more than 15% compared to the previous copper process.
