Tape Makers Come to Audio-Video Wedding Bearing High-Grade Gifts

Most videotape suppliers are introducing new, high quality tapes in response to the merger of audio and video at retail. The emergence of hi-fi VCRs is hoped to redirect consumer attention away from price and improve margins. BASF national sales manager, Larry Rallo, expects the movement to higher grade tape to change the whole market. Panasonic, Quasar, Sony and JVC have introduced new highgrade tapes for hi fi hoping to establish themselves as leaders in the blank tape market.

The VCR, computer and telephone markets are helping the accessory market continue its trend of improving with each passing year. The introduction of audio-video products will offer many opportunities to accessory makers in the second half of 1984. VCR accessory sales should accelerate because of booming hardware sales. Suppliers believe that the growing CD population will result in growth of audio accessory sales. Computer accessory sales are also expected to be strong.

Industry Will Court Computers, But Count on Audio, Video Care

Accessory suppliers believe that the computer end of the accessories business will have the strongest growth in 1984. Video accessories should have the strongest sales. Telephone accessories should do very well and audio should remain strong. Video game accessories sales will not be as good as in the past. Overall 1984 may be the best year in the industry's history.
