Teamwork buys Diamond more time to evaluate chips
Article Abstract:
Diamond Multimedia Systems prolongs cycles between product development projects to thoroughly evaluate new semiconductors for its graphics accelerator products. The company develops products rapidly once decisions are made through cross-functional development teams. The extended component selection process gives the company greater confidence in their decisions and chip suppliers. Diamond chose Nvidia from approximately 30 chip suppliers for its first 3D multimedia product due to Nvidia's NV architecture. Diamond is attempting to move 3D computer graphics to PCs and consumer applications at a relatively low price. Diamond's rapid-execution development gives the company the critical edge necessary to succeed in the PC graphics market, where products have an extremely short shelf life.

AI 'doctor' cures PC ills
Article Abstract:
SystemSoft's System Wizard diagnostic software is being licensed to computer manufacturers as a method to cut down on maintenance calls. The new program resides on a PC and sniffs out the system's configuration; it monitors the system when new hardware or software is added. System Wizard uses information from the Windows 95 registry and from the Plug and Play basic input output system (BIOS). When computer users encounter problems with their system where System Wizard is loaded, the program can be used to identify the problem and offer solutions from its knowledge database. The program can also log into a remote server and access a larger knowledge database when it cannot resolve a problem on its own.

NMB's brave move into consumer keyboards
Article Abstract:
NMB Technologies is focusing its efforts on the retail channel after initial success with its high-end mechanical keyboards and private-label products. NMB is approaching product development cautiously, however, since consumer needs differ considerably from OEMs and preferences change rapidly. The company is expanding its Right Touch product line due to favorable market conditions as demand for and revenues from specialized keyboards continues to grow. In addition, NMB recently released its ConcertMaster multimedia keyboard with integrated multimedia functions. The company depends on two engineering groups located in California and Japan to select features for products.
