The man who would buy Thomson
Article Abstract:
Thomson Multimedia is a French conglomerate suffering losses in the past two years and now that the government is planning on selling it, Daewoo Electronic Company Ltd's Chmn and CEO Soon-hoon Bae is interested in purchasing it. The company has $2.6 billion in debt and had losses of $578 million in 1996, which is triple its 1995 losses. Bae believes the company is suffering its demise because it has drifted away from its core business of mid-priced televisions and has also allowed its manufacturing plants to fall behind in modernization efforts. Many European companies abandoned the mid-priced consumer electronic market in Europe and have gone after the high-end after some disappointing quarters. But Daewoo Electronic Company remained focus on that market and saw its European revenue climb at a 30 percent pace.

The boom continues in LCDs
Article Abstract:
The market for LCD will continue to have tight supplies despite the fact that manufacturers are increasing their production capacities. Among Japanese companies increasing capacity are Matsushita Industrial Electrical Co, which is constructing three new plants, and Sharp Corp, which plans to build a $125-million plant in Western Japan after having already opened a $800-million facility in Mia prefecture. Hitachi plans to begin production at a new facility in Jul 1997 while LG Electronics is adding new plants in Korea and Taiwan. Notebook computers are driving the market and analysts believe that the market will continue to show short supplies through 1998. Analysts predict that demand for thin-film transistor LCD displays will reach 9.3 million in 1997, while supplies will peak at 7.9 million.
