Toshiba, JVC devise MPEG-2 encoder for digital broadcasts
Article Abstract:
Toshiba Corp and Victor Company of Japan Ltd are jointly developing an MPEG-2 encoder for image-signal compression in digital broadcast transmitters. Their objective is to build a model that complements both satellite and terrestrial digital broadcasting in time for the beginning of satellite digital broadcasts in Japan at yearend 2000. The companies hope that their collaboration on this project will result in the development of a basic design for an MPEG-2 encoder that will conform to Japanese digital broadcasting system specifications.

After tests, Japan readies digital broadcasts in earnest
Article Abstract:
Japanese TV broadcasting companies, digital TV makers and digital TV broadcasting equipment manufacturers are busy preparing for the launching of digital broadcasts in Japan on Dec 2000. The Japanese digital broadcast satellite system will undergo tests in June, followed by the launch of the BS-4 satellite in October. Manufacturers plan to sell their digital TVs in Jun 200, but others are waiting until July or August. Broadcast companies are expected to spend 1 trillion yen to upgrade their equipment.

Masushita, Sony, Toshiba unite for digital TV
Article Abstract:
Matsushita Electric Industrial Company Ltd, Sony Corp and Toshiba Corp have formed a joint venture to create common specifications for digital TV. The specifications will cover data storage on hard discs and other aspects of digital TV, including encryption of pay TV signals, and copyright protection of pay-per-view programs. The three companies hope that these specifications will ensure the smooth transition to digital formats.
