Triz of the trade
Article Abstract:
US companies are increasingly employing a 50-year-old problem-solving method developed by Genrich Altshuller, a patent investigator in the Soviet navy. The Theory of Inventive Problem-Solving, known as the Russian acronym Triz (pronounced trees), is based on the idea that 90 percent of all engineering problems have already been faced by other disciplines. Altshuller also determined that all inventions involve creativity in overcoming restrictions through compromise. He identified a pattern of innovation through research on patents and reasoned that the pattern could be systematically applied to any problem. The Triz process requires an extensive learning curve for engineers, as well as a working knowledge of 39 engineering parameters and 40 inventive principles. The engineers must also learn to employ the Triz contradiction table. Most companies employ Triz consultants, but Triz is seen as a way for these organizations to change the way they solve problems.

All ECA firms now in the CID
Article Abstract:
All firms belonging to the Electrical Contractors' Assn (ECA) now have free use of the reporting service provided by Construction Intelligence Data (CID), a scheme which monitors the contractual performance and payment of main contractors. The CID scheme helps users protect themselves from bad debts by alerting them to financially risky situations. In addition to the basic reporting service, FasTrak, and the more comprehensive service, MainTrak, CID can provide subscribers with financial reports on main contractors. The ultimate aim is for subscribers to use their own computer systems to access the CID database directly.

Small is beautiful
Article Abstract:
A good concept of design of Jackson Hole News is the secret of its popularity. A good design helps to personify the paper and gives the reader something to identify with. It takes all the key aspects of art, story, captions and headlines to make a good design. A good use of color and typography are the key to a great design. The real test is to design topics that are more intellectual than visual. Mike Sellett, Cammie Pyle, Richard Murphy and Diane Kaup-Benefiel transformed the Jackson Hole News into one of the world's best designed newspapers.
