How Motorola won race for Infobahn on ramp
Article Abstract:
Motorola believes a great deal of its success in entering the emerging cable modem market is due to the firm's ability to draw on cross-organizational expertise. The firm gathered technical know-how from a variety of business units in 1995 to break into the market for devices that link PCs to the local cable television network. Designing cable modems required Motorola to draw on expertise in a variety of complex, different technologies and products, including modems, data communications, semiconductors and wireless communications. Motorola is a big player in each of these technology sectors. Currently, it is the leading cellular telephone and modem maker, as well as a prominent chip and data communications vendor. One of beneficial results of Motorola's product design approach is that it was able to quickly deliver products to the market.

PBX vendor dials for PC dollars
Article Abstract:
Mitel's Personal Assistant PC-based telephone handset aims to succeed where software-based telephones, or so-called soft phones have failed. Mitel attributes soft phones lack of success to the unfamiliar interface. Personal Assistant, on the other hand, presents a handset connected via the Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface to the computer to provide computer telephone integration (CTI). This enables the phone to provide call management, annotated e-mail, digital PBX functionality, caller ID, POTS videoconferencing and voicemail. The Personal Assistant was introduced at COMDEX Fall '96 in November, 1996.
