A PROLOG simulator for interactive flexible manufacturing systems control
Article Abstract:
A simulation model of an in-line Flexible Manufacturing System has been built using the declarative computer programming language PROLOG. The model is a vehicle for the study of dynamic responses of Flexible Manufacturing System control. Animation of system status and powerful user interaction are essential for this application. A simple but effective structure has been formulated in PROLOG as a core kernel of the simulator. The decision making process is modeled as a set of functional queues. Partitioning of the decision functions permits modeling of complex peer-to-peer coordinated decision making in non-trivial control environments. This offers many advantages over traditional manufacturing simulation systems. The authors describe appropriate strategies for the realization of acceptable computational performance while retaining the powerful benefits of the PROLOG environment. The result is a practical operational system which features an incremental development upgrade path, quick prototyping, fast and clearly understood code changes. CROGRO: An Interactive Forest Growth Simulator
Article Abstract:
An educational simulator for modeling the crown growth of trees has been developed. CROGRO models crown growth of six species of trees over time and with regard to competition for light from neighboring trees. The system is interactive, user-friendly, and supports graphic output. Factors not related to light and stand density are omitted. Running time may be slow if many trees are modeled or short growing intervals selected, but because CROGRO is an educational tool, such delays can be filled with discussion. The model is being expanded to include stem growth relationships. Textual and graphic outputs from sample runs are included, as are graphs illustrating light and density functions.

Reflectone Wins Air Force Contract to Build Aerial Refueling Simulator
Article Abstract:
Reflectone, Inc. of Tampa, Florida has been awarded an 8.8 million dollar contract to build aerial refueling simulators for the Air Force. The simulators will use a sophisticated optical system for three-dimensional and depth viewing. Construction of the optical system has been subcontracted to Farrand Optical Co. of Valhalla, New York.
