A genetic algorithm-based approach for design of independent manufacturing cells
Article Abstract:
The design of independent manufacturing cells in cellular manufacturing using an approach based on genetic algorithm is described. Several manufacturing variables such as machine capacity, production volume, number of cells, processing time and cell size are considered in the approach. The problem is formulated as a 0-1 integer programming algorithm, which simultaneously determines the part family, machine cell and process plan for each component. The efficiency of the genetic algorithm-based model is demonstrated using four different size examples.

Single machine scheduling to meet due times under shutdown constraints
Article Abstract:
A single machine scheduling approach is considered for meeting due production times under shutdown constraints on the machine. The proposed algorithm assumes the shutdown as a disruptive event with a prespecified period when the machine will experience interruptions. The sum of the holding cost and the reduction cost associated with shutdown times is approximately minimized by manipulating the starting and completion times of the shutdown period.
