A genetic algorithm-based planning system for PCB component placement
Article Abstract:
A prototype genetic algorithm-based planning system provides an optimum solution to problems of printed circuit board component placement sequence. The prototype system employs a user interface for definition of search size, iteration, cross-over, and mutation probabilities. It also contains a path finder which is a genetic algorithm-based search and optimization engine. However, further studies are suggested as to the effects of the rate of mutation to the performance of the prototype.

A heuristic for component switching on SMT placement machines
Article Abstract:
A heuristic solution procedure is formulated to solve component switching problems associated with printed circuit board assembly. The procedure involves modification of 'keep component needed soonest' policy to assess the component set-up of board type sequence. It also entails the designation of component feeders in the slots of placement machine magazine. The heuristic solution has been found to be effective for data showing actual industrial application requirements.

Component kitting in semi-automated printed circuit board assembly
Article Abstract:
A heuristic method is derived to deal with the component kitting problem encountered by manufacturers of printed circuit boards. Such a problem involves the efficient allocation of components among many assembly stations while taking into account temporal and quantity limitations. The heuristic method derived seeks to minimize the number of assembly stations used. Numerical testing showed that the heuristic produced optimal results.
