A two-wire electromagnetic flowmeter cuts installation costs
Article Abstract:
Fischer & Porter's (F&Ps) Copaxt electromagnetic flowmeter is powered by a 4-20 mA signal loop which can save installation costs amounting to several hundred dollars, according to its maker based in Workington, England. According to F&P's product manager Ian Tognarelli, a standard magmeter needs a separate power supply which increases cabling costs compared to the Copaxt flowmeter. Copaxt, which operates from a single twisted pair of wires, is reportedly the first loop-powered magmeter. The magmenter draws only 0.5 W compared to 10W to 20 W for a conventional design.

Double Doppler signals reduce the ill effects of external noise for this flowmeter
Article Abstract:
PEEK Measurement Inc. of Houston, TX, uses dual-frequency Doppler (DFD) technology for its Polysonics Hydra SX 30, a newly introduced flowmeter that is less affected by external noise compared to presently available devices. DFD technology uses two distinct ultrasound (US) signals that, after transmission, can be combined while filtering out the noise to calculate flow speed. PEEK's portable flowmeter, which has been shown at ISA Expo '98 in Houston, TX, from Oct. 19, 1998, to Oct. 22, 1998, costs about $5,000 each.

Carbon dioxide gets grounded
Article Abstract:
Southern Co of Atlanta, GA, the biggest generator of electric power in the US, is in the process of evaluating a technology that promises to produce electric power without emitting carbon dioxide or any other greenhouse gases. The company is the first utility to become a member of the Zero Emission Coal Alliance, a consortium that also includes a number of coal suppliers from Canada and the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
