Article Abstract:
New military aircraft and facilitating technologies are being pursued by the US Department of Defense (DOD) despite calls for cutbacks in military expenditures and civilian space expenditures. The Air Force awarded a contract potentially worth $98 billion for 648 F-22 air superiority fighters to a consortium of Lockheed, Boeing and General Dynamics. The F-22 will employ very high-speed integrated circuitry, active-matrix liquid-crystal flat-panel displays and substantial software. The US Army awarded a contract potentially worth $34 billion for 1292 Comanche reconnaissance attack helicopters to Boeing Helicopter and Sikorsky Aircraft. Cutbacks in expenditures are expected in nuclear offensive arms, the B-2 bomber and the proposed NASA space station. Expenditures on the C-17 Air Force cargo plane, cancellation of the Navy A-12 Avenger stealth attack jet, increased funding for the Strategic Defense Initiative and growth of the market for night vision and electro-optics displays and goggles are discussed.

Article Abstract:
Two secret stealth aircraft were unveiled in Nov 1988 that feature computerized cockpit controls that allow the aircraft to be piloted by a crew of two, rather than the crew of four needed by more conventional craft. An automated design system saved great amounts of development time for the craft, which were nonetheless behind schedule. Over-the-horizon backscatter radar is being developed as an anti-stealth capability. Ford Aerospace Corp, Hughes Aircraft Co, and Texas Instruments Inc are vying for the development contract for a missile designed to pierce tank armor at medium range.
