Extreme solar storm strikes earth

On 30th October 2003, the most powerful solar storm in years rained high energy particles into the earth's atmosphere. Solar storms can cause all manner of disruptions in and around earth, including geomagnetically induced currents that course into and out and out of the power grid and can trip circuits and stress transformers.
