Boron waste recovered
Article Abstract:
Nippon Rensui Co will market in the summer of 2000 a technology that reduces the boron content of industrial wastewater to minus 1.0 ppm. The process consists of filtering the wastewater through a tower where over 99% of contaminants are adsorbed by styrene ion-exchange resin with a glucosamine functional group. The acids and salts are desorbed by acidic water, re-desorbed to a higher concentration by an anion-exchange resin. The contaminants are washed off and recovered by evaporation for re-use at 99.9% purity.

A new route to Boron-10
Article Abstract:
An improved process for concentrating boron-10 has been developed by Kobe Steel Ltd and Stella Chemifer Corp. Boron-10 is a nonradiative isotope used in radiation shielding. The process begins with the use of boron fluoride which is sourced from fluorite, containing 19.9% boron-10 and 80.1% boron-11. A pilot program with a 500-kg/yr scale has been started. Stella Chemifer will begin production of a few metric tons in the fall of 2001, while Kobe will market the boron-10.

An electrochemical route to polysilane boasts a higher yield
Article Abstract:
Osaka Gas Company Ltd, an industrial gas manufacturer, has established a procedure for producing polysilanes with a yield of 60% compared with 10% attained through the conventional processes. The production technique permits better control of the molecular weight, which provides a single distribution of polysilane, and gives a polysilane polymer with no oxygen atoms in the main structure.
