British Petroleum and Amoco tie the knot

British Petroleum PLC of London, UK, and Chicago, IL-based Amoco Corp., intend to merge and form a new company called BP Amoco PLC, which will be based in London. Pending approval from shareholders and regulators, the combined company will have 14.8 billion bll of oil and gas (O&G) reserves, and an O&G production of 2.9 million bbl/d, as well as an identical capacity for refining. With 1997 revenues of $110 billion, including almost $13 billion from petrochemicals, BP Amoco derives 64% of its total income in 1997 from exploration and production (E&P); 21% from refining and marketing; and 15% from chemicals. Nevertheless, the combined firm intends to reduce expenses by $2 billion annually, through such stragies as reducing job redundancy and integrating E&P initiatives.

BP and Ford fund carbon research

BP Group of London, UK, and Ford Motor Co of Dearborn, MI, have agreed to provide financial support to a 10-year Carbon Mitigation Initiative at Princeton University to study methods of mitigating carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels. The project will investigate three key areas, including understanding carbon's interaction with the environment over a wide range of time period extending to hundreds of thousands of years.
