Campaigning on the home front
Article Abstract:
Housing design standards in the UK over recent decades have generally been very poor, showing little imagination or variety. However, there are now signs of a growing recognition that this situation must change. These include the creation of the Popular Housing Forum, which brings together planners, developers and architects. It is now accepted that blame lies with the construction industry as a whole, and that wide agreement must be achieved on what actually constitutes good design.

Have you got news for them?
Article Abstract:
It is important that planners handle the media appropriately and ensure that they obtain maximum benefit from media coverage, according to speakers at the recent RTPI East Midlands conference. It is vital to prepare thoroughly before being interviewed by the media, and to think carefully about the message which needs to be conveyed. It is not always a good idea to avoid speaking to journalists, as this can lead to a biaised view being reported.

Out-of-town developments get a further drubbing
Article Abstract:
It is vital to reverse the decline of the UK's town centres, according to environment minister John Gummer. A sense of working, living, shopping and worshipping must be restored to urban centres if the future of the UK's towns and cities is to be secured. Allowing out-of-town developments to expand in an uncontrolled way would cause great damage to both towns and the countryside.
