Category 3: strategic quality planning
Article Abstract:
Category 3 of the 1992 Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award has now altered its focus from the strategic quality plan to the strategic business plan. It assesses how well a company has combined its total quality management (TQM) process with the strategic plan. In doing so, several errors have to be avoided. These include regarding TQM as the ultimate goal, failure to relate quality strategy to business strategy, undefined objectives, priorities and targets, lack of focus on the customer, lack of outlook on competitors and inadequate data to support the planning process.

Why do health care practitioners resist quality management?
Article Abstract:
Total quality management can improve services in the health care sector. The method proposes open communication among medical practitioners to discuss medical information and offer solutions to problems that arise from their practice. In quality management procedures, regular staff meetings are held, health service outcomes are constructively criticized and individual perceptions are positively controlled. The process must also be continuously improved.
