Simulating networks
Article Abstract:
Simulation tools, and especially the emerging class of hybrid simulation tools, are being used both for designing new networks and for effecively managing existing ones as they grow. The aim is to balance user needs against network resources and costs. Opnet Technologies' Modeler, which costs $29,000 per license, is the leading hybrid tool. It combines analytical simulation, which uses mathematical formulas to examine the network in a steady state, with discrete-event simulation, which examines a network's dynamic behavior.

Choosing management tools that work: employees who use them should help select them
Article Abstract:
Choosing the best, most appropriate management tools can be one of a manager's biggest challenges. Garrison Greenwood, a computer engineering professor at Portland State University, in Oregon, suggests that managers copy what design engineers do: get people who will use a tool involved, identify problems, and identify features that are wanted. Then, find the tool that matches the need.
