Circuit protection; consumer unit meets best of two worlds
Article Abstract:
A combination of UK and continental designs of consumer units has led to units now being available that incorporate the best of both system types, giving the consumer a wide wariety of protection and feature options. As well as circuit protection by miniature circuit breakers or residual current devices, other modules can be plugged into the consumer unit such as time clocks, transformers for bells, delay timers for staircases, push buttons, lamps and devices providing many other facilities. The consumer unit is expected to become more sophisticated and to offer more control as well as protection.

Forms of separation not the be all and end all
Article Abstract:
There is no standard for the internal design of switchboards to ensure separation of the live parts. BS 5486: Part 1 describes four forms of separation but the actual design is a matter for the manufacturer and the customer. Additional specification is necessary for safe live working and for the prevention of arcing. Modern modular designs enable safer working. Further safety features include the use of three distinct zones for busbars, terminations and equipment and spacious cabling zones.
