Circuit protection; devices for the modern office
Article Abstract:
With modern office equipment such as computers and facsimile machines a continuous and constant electricity supply is essential and this requirement places additional demands on the designers of systems. The most common causes of failure are fire and shock. Electricity supplies can be protected by a variety of devices including miniature circuit breakers, overload and short circuit protectors, uninterruptible power supplies, short circuit protectors, back-up, earth-fault protection, and residual current circuit breakers. The designer needs to be fully aware of the advantages of all such devices.

Enclosures
Article Abstract:
With the introduction of modern materials there is a very wide range of eletrical enclosures available to suit all applications. Factors affecting choice will be the surrounding environment, likelihood of physical impact, size and the need to protect the contents from such hazards as dust or damp. The British Standard Code of Practice, BS 5345 covers the selection, installation and maintenance relating to enclosures and their contents. Convenience for the user has been a recent area of activity with the introduction of flat pack supply and easy modification.

Circuit protection; co-ordination needed for top safety
Article Abstract:
An international standard is to come into force in the summer of 1992 that will require co-ordination in the incorporation of protective devices and control equipment components in electrical systems. This standard will be incorporated into the appropriate legislation in the UK. Lack of coordination has led to safety problems such as overload relays being damaged so that they become ineffective as protectors without this becoming apparent. This can present great hazards.
