A specialist voice needed
Article Abstract:
It has been proposed that a Sub Contractors Industry Liaison Confederation is set up within the UK struction Industry Employees Council but this is still seen as not giving equal power to the sub contractors. In Europe builders and service engineering specialists have distinct commercial and political representation of equal power but in the UK specialist installation engineers are firmly viewed as sub contractors to the builder. The most popular move would be to regroup and link the individual small associations representing electrical, plumbing and heating trades to produce stability and improve operating and negotiating procedures.

Work to rules
Article Abstract:
The advent of the European Union Working Time Directive, which limits the number of hours per week that an employee can work, could cost the UK building industry some 2 billion pounds sterling a year. Additionally, the directive has caused conflicts between the industry and workers over holiday pay. The new rules set a maximum working week of 48 hours, averaged over a period of 17 weeks.
