Coating hardens aluminum's surface
Article Abstract:
Mofratech, a company based in Seynod, France, has developed the Altim TD electrolytic surface-coating process for transforming the surface of aluminum into a hard, thick ceramic layer. The coating consists of a micro-arc oxidation process that is primarily of the alpha-alumina phase of aluminum oxide. The process uses a slightly alkaline electrolyte solution, with electrical micro-arcs being electronically generated over the entire surface by successive dielectric breakdown of the oxide and hydroxide layers.

Monitoring explains bubble behavior
Article Abstract:
Researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization have developed the StreamTone software that can be used in identifying various sound signatures created by bubbles of different sizes. When bubbles are former or broken up, the gas within the bubbles are compressed, causing the surrounding liquid to vibrate. As the bubbles get larger, their tones also get lower. StreamTone can be used as a diagnostic tool for tracking bubble size and distribution in mixing applications.

FEMLAB 2.0
Article Abstract:
Comsol's FEMLAB 2.0 is capable of handling virtually any model that can be described with partial differential equations, in any dimension. Users can also use the software to create and analyze models in full 3-D, and augment their analyses with the added dimension of time. Furthermore, the software has an enhanced graphical user interface that provides additional tools to facilitate 3-D modelling.
