Cutting waste at the source
Article Abstract:
Most methods of postconsumer waste handling were only moderately successful mainly due to problems relating to public perception, economics and infrastructure. These problems can be avoided, however, by focusing solid wasre reduction efforts at the beginning of the distribution chain, primarily through reducing the amount of packaging. Source reduction methods offer more benefits and have an immediate effect on waste disposal problems, both economically and environmentally. However, it is also important for government to maintain a balanced approach that gives consideration to the improvement of recycling systems to hasten the solution of the problem.

Why literacy is our problem
Article Abstract:
Businesses should play an active role raising literacy levels if they intend to be responsible for community improvement. Lower literacy rates have produced a labor ool with lesser skills, and companies located in communities can improve local standards of living through involvement in literacy programs. Providing employment and training for less educated people will also help towards improving employees' standard of living.
