Combinatorial chemistry moves beyond pharmaceuticals
Article Abstract:
Combinatorial chemistry has moved into areas outside pharmaceuticals. This new technology is changing the way materials and catalysts are discovered and developed, but a major challenge is scarcity of methods to assay a library of inorganics or catalysts quickly. Major companies, Ciba Specialties, Bayer, Goodrich, and Hoechst, have spent millions of dollars to set up alliances with Symyx Technologies, which has patented methods using the combinatorial approach to synthesize and screen libraries of supported and unsupported catalysts. CombiChem, SRI and Avantium are looking for collaboration opportunities. UOP, DuPont, Kodak, Shell, Celanese, Dow, and Lucent Technologies are said to be starting programs in-house. Topics include developing the instrumentation.

Chemistry is where you find it
Article Abstract:
Heretofore unexplored applied chemistry is discussed, based on study of a series of books by Joey Green, 'the Heloise from Hell,' who finds unusual uses for common consumer products, among them Cheez Whiz. Topics include cleaning the shower, getting Krazy Glue off skin, cleaning some gems, whitening pets with bluing, discouraging deer, removing grease from clothes, fighting plaque, cleaning blood from clothing, prolonging the life of safety razor blades, and shaving.
